Current Gallery: Figurative and Abstract Surrealism ( piece)
Aaron Schlosberg Artist Statement: Fall 2007 Prompted by surrealist automatism, my creative process is guided by intuition and curiosity. I search for and react to unexpected forms and relationships found in the formal elements of my art while making it. At times I focus on materials and forms with no thought of subject matter. At others, I pull imagery suggested by the surface such as anatomical forms, ocean life, microbial colonies, lightning, caverns and chemical interactions found in melted metal and glass. These subjects are related, visually and physically, in ways echoed throughout our universe, from the microscopic to the cosmic level. I work on many paintings at once. Between layers, a piece is set aside for days, weeks or months at a time to dry. These periods relax my relationship with the painting and lead to compositional solutions by allowing myself to view the work more objectively than otherwise possible.
